A training camp concentrates a great deal of training into a short period, in conditions where the ordinary obstacles have been removed. That is its whole value and also its whole risk. For a few days the athlete has abundant time, no commute, coaching attention, and other athletes to train with. The same few days can deliver a load the athlete cannot absorb, and the cost is paid in the fortnight afterwards rather than at the camp.
Camps come in recognisably different types, and confusing them is the commonest planning error.
The technique camp
A technique camp is short — often a single day, or a series of separate half-days across the disciplines — and its purpose is skill, not fitness. Small groups, typically fewer than a dozen per discipline, work on swimming, cycling or running technique while fresh, with individual feedback and immediate video review.
The defining characteristic is that it is low load. An athlete should leave a technique camp tired in the way that concentration is tiring, not in the way a long ride is tiring, because technique acquired under fatigue is not acquired at all. Running three technique workshops back to back in one day defeats the purpose of all three.
These camps fit anywhere in a season, and they are most valuable early in the base phase, when there is time for a change to become habitual before it has to survive racing.
The volume block
A volume camp is the opposite: several consecutive days of deliberately elevated training, usually mostly aerobic, intended as a concentrated stimulus that the athlete could not fit into an ordinary week. This is the camp that produces both the largest gains and the largest casualties.
It works within a season for the same reason a microcycle works — a concentrated load followed by a genuine reduction — and its placement matters. The conventional position is mid-base phase, far enough from a priority race that a two-week recovery afterwards costs nothing. Placed three weeks before an important event it will do measurable harm. Rules that keep a volume camp from becoming an injury
- Keep the intensity down. The stimulus is volume. Adding intensity on top converts a productive block into a hole. Almost all camp riding and running should be genuinely easy.
- Cap the increase. A useful ceiling is roughly one and a half to twice the athlete's normal weekly load, compressed into the camp. Athletes who triple it reliably regret it.
- Bias the extra volume toward cycling and swimming. Running is where the structural cost lives, and camp running volume should rise least of all.
- Plan the descent before the camp starts. The week after is part of the block, not a return to normal.
The end-of-season camp
A long camp at the close of the racing season serves a different purpose again: a final large aerobic day or weekend — an open-water swim, a long ride, a long run — in a social setting, marking the end of the competitive phase before the restoration period begins. Its value is as much psychological as physiological, and it is one of the few occasions where a mixed-ability group genuinely works, because nothing is being measured.
Structuring the days
Within a camp, ordering follows the same logic as an ordinary training day, only more so because the days are fuller.
- Technical work first, in the morning, before accumulated fatigue makes precise movement impossible.
- The long session in the middle of the day, when it is warmest and fuel from breakfast is available.
- Easy movement in the evening rather than a third real session — a loosening swim or an easy spin.
- A deliberately lighter day in the middle of any camp longer than four days. Not a rest day necessarily, but a day that does not compound.
Fuelling deserves specific attention, because camp appetite lags camp expenditure by about a day. Athletes routinely under-eat on days one and two and then find days three and four inexplicably hard. Eating deliberately rather than by appetite for the first two days prevents most of it.
Mixed ability, and the group problem
A shared camp day is experienced very differently by a first-season athlete and a competitive one, and the entry-level athlete will invariably try to hold the group's pace. On a single long ride that produces one very good day and three ruined ones.
The remedies are explicit and unglamorous: split the group by pace on long sessions and rejoin for the technical work; set individual intensity targets rather than group ones; and state plainly that the camp's purpose is not to determine who is fastest. The week after
The most important part of a camp happens once it is over. The adaptation to a concentrated block is expressed during the recovery that follows, and an athlete who returns straight to a normal week has bought the fatigue without the benefit.
A reduced week afterwards — short, easy, frequent sessions rather than nothing at all — is the standard prescription, followed by a careful return. Judging whether the block worked should wait about two weeks; measured on the Monday after, every camp looks like a mistake.
